Belmont, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team defeated Belmont Abbey College 3-1 in Conference Carolinas action Tuesday night in Belmont, N.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • UMO came out firing as the Trojans charged out to a 12-4 lead that prompted a Belmont Abbey timeout.
  • The Trojans did not back down as they utilized a late four-point run to capture the set 25-17.

SECOND SET

  • Mount Olive took control of the second set by taking the first three points, however, the Trojans did not stop there as they put together a 12-1 run to led 20-8.
  • Despite a four-point run late in the set by the Crusaders, UMO held on to take the final two points and take the set 25-14.

THIRD SET

  • The third set was all Belmont Abbey as the Crusaders built a 14-7 lead midway through the set and took the third stanza 25-18 with the help of a pair of late three-point runs.

FOURTH SET

  • In the final set, both teams battled close as neither squad held more than a one-point lead through the first 16 points.
  • BAC pushed three unanswered points across to hold its largest lead of the set at 11-8.
  • Mount Olive did not allow the lead to stand as Bret Rutledge sparked a UMO run of eight straight points. 
  • Mount Olive kept the momentum finishing the set with a 5-1 run on its way to a 25-17 set victory.

KEY STATS

  • Junior Robert Poole led the Trojans with 14 kills and added three digs and a pair of blocks. 
  • Junior Bret Rutledge was just behind Poole with 13 kills and a pair of blocks as well.
  • Leading the Trojans in assists and digs was junior Jeff Yasalonis who tallied 35 assists and 12 digs.
