Due West, S.C. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team topped Erskine College in a three-set sweep, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22, on Saturday afternoon in Due West, S.C.

FIRST SET

  • After Erskine earned the first point, UMO recorded four-straight points to open a 4-1 lead.
  • The Flying Fleet crept back into the set as Erskine came back to tie the opening frame at 14.
  • UMO responded with a 6-1 run to open up a 20-15 advantage over Erskine.
  • Erskine closed within two at 24-22, but the Trojans captured the first set win on a service error by the Flying Fleet.
  • The Trojans were outhit by Erskine, .455 to .389, in the opening set.

SECOND SET

  • After exchanging points through the first 15 points of the set, Erskine grabbed the lead at 10-8.
  • UMO pushed back with a 7-2 run to take a 15-12 advantage over the Flying Fleet.
  • Erskine never let the Trojans pull away as the Flying Fleet remained within three at 19-16.
  • The Flying Fleet took a 22-21 lead, but Mount Olive finished the set on a 4-0 run to give the Trojans the 25-22 set victory.

THIRD SET

  • Following a hotly contested early portion of the set, UMO jumped out to a 17-11 lead.
  • Erskine stormed back with an 11-6 run to get within a single point at 23-22.
  • As was true in the previous two sets, Mount Olive scored the final two points to close out the set with a 25-22 win and earn the three-set sweep of Erskine.

KEY STATS

  • Junior Bret Rutledge led the way for the Trojans with 18 kills and a .577 hitting percentage in the win.
  • Adding nine kills and three service aces was junior Robert Poole.
  • Senior Andrew Sydow contributed four block assists to the effort.
