FAIRFAX, Va. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team fell in four sets to the Patriots of George Mason University on Friday night in Fairfax, Va.

How It Happened

FIRST SET

  • The set started off pretty evenly as the Patriots held a 4-3 lead before the Trojans scored three straight points to take a 6-4 lead.
  • George Mason came back to trail by one, 11-10, but a kill by Bret Rutledge and two Robert Poole aces put Mount Olive up by four, 14-10.
  • A 6-2 run by GMU tied the set at 16 all which caused a battle for control of the score.
  • The score tied three times before the Patriots took a two-point lead, 21-19, but the Trojans came back to tie the game at 23 all.
  • After the score knotted up two more times, last at 25 all, the Trojans put two points together to take the first set 27-25.

SECOND SET

  • Set two began with the teams vying for control of the score as the game tied up five times before George Mason took a three-point lead, 8-5.
  • The Trojans came back to trail by one, 9-8, following a 3-1 run that included a kill by Jerell Rogers and two Patriot errors.
  • GMU went up by four points, 13-9, but UMO countered with a 4-3 run to out the score at 16-13.
  • The Trojans started to rally but the Patriots lead grew to high as George Mason won the set 25-18.

THIRD SET

  • Mason opened the third set going up 5-3 but Mount Olive came back to tie the set five all following a pair of Patriot errors.
  • The squads remained close in score as the set tied four times, the last at 10 all, before a 7-3 run by GMU put the score at 17-13.
  • The Trojans cut the lead to two after a kill by Rogers and a Patriot error put the score at 17-15, but George Mason went on an 8-3 run that closed out the set putting them ahead two games to one.

FOURTH SET

  • The fourth set opened with George Mason quickly going up by six points with the score sitting at 9-3.
  • UMO scored a handful of points to trail by six, 14-8, following three kills and a pair of Patriot errors.
  • The Mount Olive team effort was valiant but the home Patriots closed out the set on an 11-7 run to win the game 25-15 and the match 3-1.
