MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team defeated Erskine in three sets in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.

FIRST SET

  • The Trojans opened the match going up 8-4 following five straight points on three kills, an ace by Robert Poole and a Flying Fleet error.
  • Mount Olive went ahead by six points, 14-8, on three kills and three Erskine errors.
  • UMO's lead grew to 10-points as the team closed out the set on an 11-7 run taking game one, 25-15.

SECOND SET

  • The teams were more evenly matched in the second set as the score sat tied at eight-all early in the set.
  • The score tied four more times, last at 12 all, before the Trojans took a small three-point lead, 15-12.
  • A 6-4 run gave Mount Olive a five-point lead, 21-16, forcing an Erskine timeout.
  • Three straight points for the Flying Fleet following the timeout were no match for the Trojans as they closed out the set scoring the final four points to take set two 25-19.

THIRD SET

  • Mount Olive jumped out to the early lead in the third set going up 8-3 over the Fleet.
  • Erskine came back within two points, 10-8, but a 4-2 run by UMO featuring two kills from Poole, and one from both Luke Visgitis and Bret Rutledge put the home team ahead by four, 15-11.
  • The Flying Fleet stayed within a couple points of the Trojans through the next several services climbing back with two-points, 20-18, late in the set.
  • UMO squashed any Erskine hope for a set win as they closed out the game on a 5-1 run winning the third set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
