MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team defeated Limestone College in three sets in Conference Carolinas action on Friday evening in Gaffney, S.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Mount Olive opened the game going up 8-3 early in the set forcing a Limestone timeout following three-straight Robert Poole aces.
  • The Saints came back following the timeout to trail by two, 13-11, following an 8-5 run.
  • UMO countered with a 7-3 run of there own to increase their lead to six points, 20-14, forcing yet another Limestone timeout.
  • The Trojans carried the momentum through the final few services as they closed out the set on a 5-1 run to win the opening game 25-15.

SECOND SET

  • The Saints started the second set off going up 5-3 over the Trojans through the opening services.
  • UMO came back to even up the score at seven-all and took the lead scoring six straight points putting the score at 13-7.
  • Limestone tried to cut the Mount Olive lead but the Trojans continued to dominate closing out the second set on a 12-7 run winning game two 25-14 and taking a 2-0 match lead.

THIRD SET

  • The third set was the most even of the three games as Limestone opened the game taking an early three-point lead 7-4 over the Trojans.
  • Mount Olive went on a 6-2 run taking a one-point lead, 10-9, following four consecutive points including three UMO kills and a Limestone error.
  • UMO grew their lead to four, 14-10, but the Saints fought back to come within one point, 17-16, midway through the set.
  • A 5-2 run by the Trojans gave UMO the 22-18 lead following four kills from Bret Rutledge, Luke Visgitis, and Joel Roberts.
  • Limestone again cut the lead to two points but back-to-back points from Robert Poole, on a kill and an ace, gave the Trojans the 25-21 set win and the 3-0 match win.

KEY STATS

  • Robert Poole (12) and Bret Rutledge (9) combined for 21 of the teams 32 kills.
  • Rutledge led the serving game with six aces while Poole was just behind with five of his own.
  • Freshman Luke Visgitis led the Trojans blocking game with seven assisted stops. 
  • Senior setter Jeff Yasalonis eclipsed the 1,900 assist mark with 30 sets on the night.
