MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team marched past the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College in three sets (25-16, 25-20, 25-14) on Friday evening at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • The Trojans opened the first set going up 11-4 forcing a Belmont Abbey timeout. Five kills, two aces, and four BAC errors contributed to the UMO lead.
  • A 7-7 run by both teams put the score at 20-11 as Belmont called their second timeout of the set.
  • Mount Olive closed out the set scoring five points on four kills and a Bret Rutledge ace to win 25-16.

SECOND SET

  • The teams were evenly matched through the opening services as the score sat tied at five-all following a BAC kill. 
  • UMO put together an 8-4 run that included three kills, two UMO blocks, and three Crusader errors to lead 13-9.
  • Belmont Abbey pulled within three points, 15-12, before Mount Olive went on a 9-3 run taking the nine-point lead, 24-15.
  • The Crusaders benefited from four Trojan errors pulling them within four points, 24-20, before Eric Visgitis put down the final kill for the Trojans to win set two, 25-20.

THIRD SET

  • Mount Olive came out of the gates on fire as they quickly jumped out to a 12-6 lead over Belmont Abbey forcing the visitors to call a timeout following back-to-back aces from Joel Roberts.
  • The Trojans lead grew to eight points, 19-11, forcing BAC to call their final timeout, following three Trojan kills and four Crusader errors.
  • UMO continued to dominate as they closed out the set on a 6-3 run to win the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.

KEY STATS

  • Robert Poole led the team in kills (15) and digs (8) while hitting .462 %.
  • Jeff Yasalonis tallied 32 assists in the match and was second in digs behind Poole with seven.
  • Bret Rutledge served up four aces while Joel Roberts added two of his own.
  • Eric Visgitis stopped five Crusader attacks with two solo blocks and three assisted blocks.
  • Jerell Rogers led all Trojans with a .667 hitting percentage tallying five kills and one error on six attempts.
