MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team rolled past the Royals of Queens University in three sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Mount Olive opened the match on fire as they quickly went up 12-5 as Queens called a timeout. Five Trojan kills, two Robert Poole aces and a handful of Royals errors contributed to the UMO lead.
  • The Trojans maintained an eight-point lead as the Royals called their second timeout of the set with UMO leading 20-12 following the five kill run for UMO.
  • UMO held off the feisty Royals to win set one 25-17 courtesy of three kills and a pair of Queens errors.

SECOND SET

  • Mount Olive continued to roll as they went up 9-2 early on in the second set due largely to the help of five Queens errors.
  • The Trojans went on an 8-7 run taking the 17-9 lead as another Queens timeout was called. 
  • UMO finished out the set on another 8-7 run to win 25-16 and take the 2-0 lead in the match.

THIRD SET

  • It looked as though the Trojans were going to coast through the third set as they went ahead 8-2 right out of the gate.
  • The Royals pulled within four points trailing 12-8, following a 6-4 run.
  • Mount Olive held a six-point lead through the middle of the match, leading 22-16 just after the Queens timeout.
  • Six Trojan errors got the Royals back in the match as they trailed 24-23, before a kill by Bret Rutledge put the third set away and gave the Trojans the match win, 3-0.

KEY STATS

  • Robert Poole recorded a double-double tallying 14 kills and 13 digs. Poole also dished out four aces in the game.
  • Jeff Yasalonis also tallied a double-double on 35 assists and 11 digs.
  • Bret Rutledge smacked down 12 kills as the second leading attacker while Eric Visgitis recorded eight.
