Trojans Fall To No. 1 Long Beach State In Non-Conference Match

LONG BEACH, CALIF. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team fell to the No. 1 Beach of Long Beach State University (LBSU) in three sets at the Pyramid in Long Beach, California.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Long Beach State opened the set by scoring the first four points and held a four-point lead, 8-4, through the early services.
  • Mount Olive came back to take a one-point lead, 9-8, on five consecutive points that included four Beach errors and a Bret Rutledge kill.
  • The Trojans tied the set up at 14 all following a back and forth battle for points by both teams.
  • It was all LBSU the rest of the set as they went on an 11-4 run winning the opening set 25-18.

SECOND SET

  • The Trojans took the early 3-1 lead to open the second set following two Luke Visgitis kills and a kill by Robert Poole.
  • Long Beach St. tied the set three all but the Trojans maintained the one-point lead following a Beach service error.
  • Mount Olive stayed with Long Beach St. as the set tied seven all, but the Beach went on a 6-3 run to take the three-point, 13-10 lead.
  • UMO hung with LBSU midway through the set trailing 16-14, but the Beach closed out the set on a 9-2 run winning set two, 25-16.

THIRD SET

  • The third set began with the Beach jumping out to a 6-2 lead over the Trojans.
  • UMO came back to trail by one, 7-6, on a 4-1 run. 
  • Five consecutive LBSU points extended the Beach's lead to six, 12-6.
  • The Trojans climbed within four points, 17-13, of the Beach, but the host team was too much as they closed out the set on an 8-1 run winning set three 25-14 and the match 3-0.

KEY STATS

  • Robert Poole led the Trojans with eight kills while Luke Visgitis was just behind with six.
  • Jeff Yasalonis tallied 20 assists on the night.
  • This match was special as Robert Poole was able to face his little brother Ryan Poole, a freshman at Long Beach St., on the court.

Mount Olive continues their cross-country road trip as they head back east to Arizona to compete in a tournament hosted by Grand Canyon University. The Trojans face the Oaks of Menlo College on Friday, March 9, at 12 p.m. EST/10 a.m MST. They follow later that day when they face the host No. 13 Lopes at 8 p.m. EST/6 p.m. MST.
