Trojans Topple Lions In Comeback Win

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team won three straight sets after dropping the first to overcome the Lions of Emmanuel College on Friday evening in Conference Carolinas action at the Shaw Athletic Center in Franklin Springs, Ga.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Emmanuel started the game quickly going up 7-3 over the visiting Mount Olive team.
  • UMO pulled within a point a couple of times, 8-7 and 12-11, before the Lions took a four-point lead, 19-15, into a Mount Olive timeout.
  • The Trojans tried to mount a comeback but ran out of time as Emmanuel won the opening set 25-20.

SECOND SET

  • UMO returned the favor as they opened the second set on a 10-5 run that forced an Emmanuel timeout. Five kills, two Robert Poole aces and three Lion errors contributed to the UMO lead.
  • The Lions closed the gap on a 5-2 run with the Trojans holding a slim 12-10 lead as they approached the midpoint of the set.
  • Mount Olive grew their lead back to five points, 16-11, on two kills, a Brad Monaghan ace and an Emmanuel error.
  • Despite the Lions pulling within two, 17-15, the Trojans held off the home team to win the second set 25-19 and tying the match at one point apiece.

THIRD SET

  • The third set began a little more evenly as the teams sat tied nine all through the opening serves.
  • Neither team took more than a two-point lead through the middle of the set until the Trojans went ahead by three points, 23-20, late in the third.
  • Emmanuel went on a 3-1 run to put the score at 24-23 in Mount Olive's favor and the Trojans clinched the set on a kill by Josh Donahue to win 25-23, taking the 2-1 match lead.

FOURTH SET

  • Mount Olive carried the momentum from the second and third sets into the fourth as they opened play going up 9-5 over Emmanuel.
  • The Trojans led by seven points, 12-5, as the Lions called timeout.
  • Following the timeout, UMO closed out the set on a 12-11 run and win the set 25-16.
