Mount Olive Falls To Flying Fleet In Three Sets

DUE WEST, S.C. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team fell in three sets to the Flying Fleet of Erskine College on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action in Due West, S.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Erskine opened the game by quickly gaining the 9-3 lead over Mount Olive.
  • UMO went on a 7-1 run that tied the set at 10 all, but the Flying Fleet countered with a 9-2 run of their own taking a seven-point, 19-12, lead.
  • The Trojans fought back from the seven-point deficit to tie the set a 23 all following an 11-4 run spurred by four kills, four Erskine errors and three service aces, two by Robert Poole and one by Josh Donahue.
  • Despite their best efforts, the Trojans gave up the last two points as Erskine took the first set 25-23.

SECOND SET

  • The second set started off more competitively as the Trojans held a slim lead, 7-6, after the opening serves.
  • Both squads remain close throughout the middle of the set as the score sat tied 15 all following an Erskine service error.
  • The Flying Fleet went on an 8-3 run taking a 23-18 lead.
  • UMO scored three more points putting the score a 24-21 but Erskine won set two 25-21, following a UMO service error.

THIRD SET

  • Erskine securely held the lead throughout the entirety of the third set as they opened up with an 8-3 run out of the gates.
  • UMO scored seven more points through the rest of the set as the Flying Fleet won 25-10 and took the match 3-0.

Mount Olive is back in action as they return home on Friday, March 23, to host Limestone at Kornegay Arena. The Trojans and Saints are set for a 7 p.m. first serve in Conference Carolinas action in Mount Olive, N.C.
