BRISTOL, TENN. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Tornado of King University in the Conference Carolinas regular season finale in Bristol, Tenn.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • The first set began with the Trojans taking a 3-1 lead, but King came back to lead 5-3 following a 4-0 run.
  • After a five-all tie, the Tornado went on a 7-2 run to take the 12-7 forcing a Trojan timeout.
  • Following the timeout, UMO went on a 6-3 run putting the score at 15-13 in King's favor.
  • Despite trying battle back Mount Olive fell 25-19 as King took a 1-0 match lead.

SECOND SET

  • Set two began with the Trojans taking a slim 7-5 lead following three Tornado errors and four kills.
  • King tied the set at seven-all and then again at 10-all before the Trojans went on a 5-1 run as UMO led 15-11.
  • The Tornado followed with a 7-2 run taking an 18-17 lead. 
  • The score tied five times before Mount Olive took a two-point lead following a 3-0 run putting the score at 24-22.
  • King tied the set up at 24 all following their timeout and closed out the set on a 4-2 run to win the second set 28-26 over the Trojans.

THIRD SET

  • After UMO opened the set with the first two points, King went on a 7-3 run taking the 7-5 lead over the Trojans.
  • Mount Olive scored four straight points to go ahead 9-7 but the Tornado came back to tie the set at nine-all.
  • After two more ties of the score, last at 11 all, King went into overdrive closing out the set on a 14-4 run winning the third set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

KEY STATS

  • Robert Poole led the Trojans with 15 kills while Brad Monaghan was second with 11.
  • Josh Donahue climbed closer to the 1,000 digs mark as he tallied 11 digs in the match. He needs 11 more digs to reach 1,000 career digs.
  • Jeff Yasalonis recorded 35 assists growing his career total to 2,548.

UP NEXT

Mount Olive is back in action on April 17, when they host a quarterfinal match of the Conference Carolinas tournament. Who the Trojans will face is still to be determined but the match will start at 6:30 p.m.
