Mount Olive Wraps Up Road Trip With Three-Set Loss At Lincoln Memorial

CUMBERLAND GAP, TENN. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team fell in three sets to the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action in Cumberland Gap, Tenn. Tobi Azeez led the team with 16 kills, a career-high for the freshman from Australia.

FIRST SET

  • The opening set began with the teams trading points back and forth as the score sat knotted up 9-9 following a kill by Luke Visgitis. Including the kill by L. Visgitis, UMO recorded three others, two from Tobi Azeez and one from Brad Monaghan, while the remaining five points came off of Railsplitter errors.
  • Lincoln Memorial took an eight-point lead following a 12-4 rally that put the Railsplitters up 21-13 as Mount Olive called timeout.
  • Coming out of the break, the Trojans rallied back to pull within two points, 23-21, after an 8-2 run by the Green and White that made Lincoln Memorial call their second timeout. Four kills, back-to-back blocks by Luke Visgitis and Shane Yeo, and two LMU errors aided in the rally.
  • The Railsplitters edged out the Trojans in the final services as they earned the two points needed to reach 25 first to win the opening set 25-22.

SECOND SET

  • The second set began just as competitively as the first as the teams traded points, but Mount Olive took a slim 9-8 lead following a kill from Monaghan.
  • LMU scored four straight points to take a 12-9 lead into a UMO timeout.
  • Mount Olive came out of the timeout to knot the score up twice following a 5-2 run that put the score at 14 all.
  • Both squads went back to trading points over several serves but the Trojans called timeout as the Railsplitters took a two-point, 20-18 lead.
  • Following the timeout, Mount Olive scored on a pair of kills from Azeez and Eric Visgitis but Lincoln Memorial held off the rallying Trojans to take the second set 25-20.

THIRD SET

  • UMO opened the third set with a slight advantage holding a 9-8 lead through the opening serves. Three points came from kills, one from Azeez and two from Monaghan, while the remaining six were courtesy of errors by LMU.
  • The Railsplitters went on a 5-0 run that split a Trojan timeout to take a 13-9 lead, but UMO responded with four consecutive points to tie the score at 13 all.
  • Neither team took more than a two-point lead through the middle of the set as the two squads traded points and the lead several times.
  • UMO called a timeout following a 3-0 run by LMU that gave the Railsplitters a 22-21 lead.
  • Following the timeout, the Trojans led a 3-2 run that knotted the score at 24 all as Lincoln Memorial called their own timeout.
  • The Railsplitters scored the next two points following the timeout to take the third and final set 26-24 and the match 3-0.
