Trojans Complete Weekend Sweep With Three-Set Win Over Emmanuel

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- Mount Olive completed the weekend sweep with a three-set win over the Lions of Emmanuel College on Saturday morning in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Emmanuel took an early 4-1 lead following three straight errors from the Trojans, but Mount Olive tied the score up at four-all following a kill by Jarrod Ferguson and two Lion errors.
  • The score remained close as neither team took hold of the lead until the Trojans scored three points, all EC errors, following an 11 all tie, to go ahead 14-11 that forced Emmanuel to call a timeout.
  • UMO came out of the timeout on a 6-3 rally that included a kill by Iyanu Adebisi and a double block by Yigit Erkek and Ferguson, as well as four Lions errors.
  • Following a second Emmanuel timeout, the Lions scored four points to climb back within three of the Trojans, 21-18.
  • UMO held off the rallying Lions to win the set 25-18 after putting together a string of four points including back-to-back double blocks.

SECOND SET

  • Set two began with the teams trading the first six points before UMO got three in a row on an EC error, a kill by Brad Monaghan and an ace by Adebisi to take a 6-3 lead.
  • Following a pair of Emmanuel points, Mount Olive scored five consecutive points on a pair of kills, a pair of blocks and a Lion error to lead 11-5 as Emmanuel called timeout.
  • Emmanuel came out of their timeout on a 4-1 run to pull within three points, 12-9, of the Trojans who called a timeout to strategize.
  • UMO grew their lead back out to six points, 17-11, after Ferguson put down a kill and an ace, and the Lions gave up three errors.
  • Mount Olive closed out the set on an 8-6 run to win the set 25-17 and go up 2-0 in match points. In the run by the Trojans, UMO recorded five kills, one by Monaghan, Ferguson, and Eric Visgitis and two from Luke Visgitis.

THIRD SET

  • The Trojans opened the third set on a 6-2 run that included two service aces from Ferguson, a kill by Adebisi, a double block with Adebisi and Luke Visgitis and two Lion errors. 
  • Following their called timeout, Emmanuel went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-6 lead before Mount Olive settled down and scored five consecutive points to lead 11-7 following three Trojan kills.
  • A pair of kills by the Visgitis brothers and a double block featuring Nicolas Laxar and Luke Visgitis drove the Trojan lead to six points, 16-10, as Emmanuel called timeout.
  • The Lions came back within four points, 19-15, but UMO held off Emmanuel to close out the third set on a 6-3 run scoring the match point on a service error by the Lions.

KEY STATS

  • Freshman Jarrod Ferguson had a great day leading the Trojans with 10 kills and three aces. He also dug up three attacks and assisted on three blocks.
  • Nicolas Laxar had 30 assists in the match to lead the assist category while Joel Roberts had 11 digs on the Trojans defense.
