Trojans Fall In Four To Barton Bulldogs

WILSON, N.C. --- Mount Olive fell in four sets to the Bulldogs of Barton College in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action on Tuesday evening at Wilson Gymnasium in Wilson, N.C. Tobi Azeez led the Trojan attack with 13 kills while Jarrod Ferguson was close behind with 11 of his own.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • The beginning of the match started off close as Barton held an 8-5 lead through the opening serves.
  • The Trojans scored three straight to knot the score at eight-all following two kills, one each from Eric Visgitis and Nicolas Laxar, and a double block by Tobi Azeez and Eric Visgitis.
  • Barton went on a 6-1 run taking a 14-9 lead into a Mount Olive timeout as the Trojans committed four errors in the Bulldogs favor.
  • UMO pulled within three points, 16-13, after a 4-2 run that saw the Trojans put down four kills, two by Jarrod Ferguson and one each from Brad Monaghan and Luke Visgitis.
  • Mount Olive called their second timeout following a 4-0 run by Barton that gave the home team a 20-13 lead.
  • The Trojans scored a handful more points but could not catch the Bulldogs who won set one 25-18.

SECOND SET

  • Barton took a sizable lead to begin the second set after a 10-1 run to open set two. UMO's lone point came on a Bulldog service error and after BC had already scored eight.
  • The Trojans scored seven points but still trailed by nine, 17-8, as they called their second timeout of the set.
  • Seven more points fell in Mount Olive's favor but Barton again held too great a lead to win set two 25-15 and taking a 2-0 match lead.

THIRD SET

  • The Bulldogs scored the first two points but the next three were all UMO who took their first lead of the night in the third set.
  • Mount Olive led an 8-6 run that included seven kills for the Trojans who held an 11-8 lead.
  • Three more kills and two Barton service errors put Mount Olive up 16-13 as Barton called their first timeout of the evening.
  • BC scored a pair of kills out of the timeout but UMO went on a 4-1 run to lead 20-16 as yet another TO was called.
  • A kill by Iyanu Adebisi capped a 5-4 run that gave the Trojans their only set win of the evening with the score sitting at 25-20.

FOURTH SET

  • UMO opened the fourth set with six kills as they held a slim 6-5 lead over the Bulldogs.
  • Barton rallied on a 6-1 run to take an 11-7 lead on three kills and three Trojan errors.
  • Mount Olive went on a 6-3 run following their called timeout to pull within a point, 14-13. Barton called a timeout following a block from Adebisi that capped the scoring drive for UMO.
  • The Bulldogs took off on a 7-1 rally going up 21-14 out of their timeout.
  • The Trojans scored three more points in the remainder of the set but Barton held off Mount Olive to win the fourth set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
