Trojans Fall To Cobras In Five Sets

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- Mount Olive fell to the Cobras of Coker College in nonconference men's volleyball action on Wednesday evening at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C. Brad Monaghan had a 20 kill night while Eric Visgitis put down 12 of his own.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Coker began the set on an 8-5 run but the Trojans battled back on a 7-4 run to knot the score at 12 all.
  • Another 7-3 run for Mount Olive gave the Trojans a three-point lead 19-16 into a Cobra timeout.
  • Following the timeout, Coker went on a 5-0 rally to reclaim the lead, 21-19, before UMO buckled down and scored the last six points of the set to take the opening frame 25-21.

SECOND SET

  • UMO opened the second set with a pretty commanding lead of 10-4.
  • The Cobras put in a good effort to fight back and tie the score but came two points shy, 14-12, before the Trojans went on a 7-0 rally to lead by nine, 21-12.
  • Both teams scored four points to close the set as Mount Olive took the second set 25-16 and a 2-0 match lead.

THIRD SET

  • Coker took an early 8-4 lead to begin the third set.
  • UMO pulled within two-points, 8-6, but an 8-5 run by the Cobras extended their lead to five points, 16-11.
  • The lead grew to eight points following a 5-2 run the forced UMO to call both their timeouts to try and regroup and come up with a gameplan.
  • After their second timeout, the Trojans turned things around pulling within one point, 24-23, following a 10-3 run led by UMO.
  • Mount Olive could not stop the 6-9 Santos who put down a kill for the final point and forced a fourth set.

FOURTH SET

  • The Cobras carried the momentum from their third set win into the fourth set as they took a 7-2 lead into a Mount Olive timeout.
  • A 12-10 run by the Trojans cut the five-point Cobra lead for just three, 17-14 before Coker scored two to reopen the five-point lead 19-14.
  • UMO pulled back within two, 19-17, but Coker went on a 4-0 run to lead 23-17 following four errors by the Trojans.
  • UMO score two more, one a kill from Luke Visigitis and a service error by Coker, but the Trojans ran out of time as CC scored two to take set four 25-19.

FIFTH SET

  • The Cobras scored the opening two points before the Trojans responded with three straight to take a 3-2 lead.
  • Both squads traded points a few times, last at six-all before Coker took a two-point, 8-6 lead as the teams switched sides of the court and Mount Olive called timeout.
  • CC took a four-point lead, 11-7, following a 3-1 run but three Cobra errors put the Trojans a point behind, 11-10 and back in the game.
  • Two Coker points off back-to-back blocks made Mount Olive call timeout but the home team could not muster the comeback to win as the Cobras scored two more points to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2 after trailing two sets.
