Mount Olive Snaps Four-Game Skid With Win Over Lincoln Memorial

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The Mount Olive Trojans defeated the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University in four sets on Friday evening in nonconference men's volleyball action at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C. Iyanu Adebisi had a record night with 19 kills in the match.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • LMU took the early lead over UMO opening the match on an 11-3 run to force a Mount Olive timeout.
  • The Trojans used their second timeout after a 6-3 run trailing the Railsplitters by 11 points, 17-6.
  • Mount Olive cut the lead to single-digits following a 7-3 run the put the score at 20-13. Five kills, three from Brad Monaghan and two from Adebisi, a Monaghan ace and an LMU error contributed to the run.
  • UMO outscored LMU in the final stretch, 6-5, but the Railsplitters found the five points need to take the opening set 25-19.

SECOND SET

  • The second set began more competitively as Lincoln Memorial started on a 5-3 run, but Mount Olive responded with a 5-2 run to take a 10-7 lead at the first called timeout.
  • UMO continued to roll as 7-3 rally gave them a seven-point lead, 17-10 as LMU called their second timeout.
  • A 9-2 run by the Railsplitters knotted the score at 19 all, but the Trojans closed out the set on a 6-4 run to win 25-23.

THIRD SET

  • Lincoln Memorial got out to a 7-3 lead through the early serves of the third set.
  • UMO responded with a 6-2 run the tied the score at nine-all before LMU went on an 8-4 run going up 17-13 into a UMO timeout.
  • The Trojans responded with a 7-3 rally out of the timeout that knotted the score once again, this time at 20-all.
  • Mount Olive took a two-point lead 24-22 but Lincoln Memorial came back to lead 25-24 following three consecutive points.
  • Following a UMO timeout, the teams proceeded to trade the lead twice and tie the score up nine times before the Trojans scored back-to-back points on a Luke Visgitis kill and a Monaghan service ace to win 35-33.

FOURTH SET

  • The Trojans rode the momentum from the third set into the fourth as they opened the final set on a 6-0 run.
  • Following their own called timeout, the Railsplitters went on a 7-6 run the put the score at 12-7 in favor of Mount Olive.
  • Mount Olive took an eight-point lead following an 8-3 spurt that put the score at 20-12 as LMU called their second timeout.
  • Lincoln Memorial outscored the Trojans 8-5 down the home stretch, but Mount Olive held them off to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.

Mount Olive will hit the road for a pair of weekend Conference Carolinas contests at Emmanuel and Erskine on Friday and Saturday respectively. The Trojans and Lion will meet at 7 p.m. in the Shaw Athletic Center in Franklin Springs, Ga. on Friday. The Trojans then head up the road to Due West, S.C., where they will take on the Flying Fleet for a 2 p.m. match in the Belk Arena.
