FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. --- The Mount Olive Trojans fell to the Lions of Emmanuel College in five sets on Friday evening in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at the Shaw Athletic Center in Franklin Springs, Ga.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • The teams began the first set neck-and-neck as they traded points but remained tied at nine-all early on. 
  • Emmanuel took a three-point lead, 12-9, but Mount Olive came back to take the lead, 16-14, following a 7-2 run and the Lions called timeout as they trailed 19-16.
  • A kill by Eric Visgitis put the Trojans up 20-16 but the Lions battled back within two, 22-20, before the Trojans reopened a four-point lead on back-to-back errors by the Lions to lead 24-20 into a Lion timeout.
  • Emmanuel scored two points out of the timeout but the Trojans held onto win the opening set 25-22.

SECOND SET

  • The Lions came out in the second set taking an early 7-2 lead as the Trojans gave up x points on errors.
  • Mount Olive battled back within two points, 10-8, after a 6-3 run that included two kills, two Lion errors, an ace by Tobi Azeez, and a double-block from Brad Monaghan and Eric Visgitis.
  • Emmanuel extended their lead to six points, 16-10, after their own 6-2 run but three consecutive points for UMO on Adebisi and Azeez kills, and a Monaghan ace to trail 16-13, heading into an Emmanuel timeout.
  • The Trojans came out of the timeout to knot the score at 19 all but the Lions put together a pair of points to lead 21-19 into a Trojan timeout.
  • UMO scored four points to pull within one of EC, 24-23, but the Lions found the last point on a kill to win set two 25-23. 

THIRD SET

  • Neither of the teams found a true lead as the squads sat knotted up at 15 all midway through the set.
  • Emmanuel found themselves leading by two, 17-15, and following a Lions timeout the Trojans went on an 8-4 run to take their own two-point lead 23-21 nearing the end of the set.
  • Both teams scored a pair of points to close out the set as the Trojans held off the Lions to win 25-23.

FOURTH SET

  • The fourth set began with the Lions taking an early 7-3 lead for the second time on the evening.
  • Following a Mount Olive timeout, Emmanuel opened up a seven-point lead that they held heading into the second UMO timeout, 17-10.
  • UMO scored a handful more points throughout the remainder of the set but EC had too great a lead as they won set four 25-16 and evened up the match score at two sets apiece.

FIFTH SET

  • Emmanuel carried their momentum from the fourth set into the fifth opening up the final bout with a 7-3 run.
  • UMO called a timeout as the teams switched side with EC leading 8-4.
  • The Trojans fought back to tie the score at 12 all following an 8-3 rally and took the one-point lead, 13-12, after a service ace from Jarrod Ferguson.
  • A timeout called by the Lions stopped the Trojans momentum as the host team came out to score three straight points to win the final set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
