Trojans Bounce Back With Four-Set Win Over The Flying Fleet

DUE WEST, S.C. --- The Mount Olive Trojans defeated the Flying Fleet of Erskine College in four sets on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at the Belk Arena in Due West, S.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Erskine opened the first set on a 5-3 run but Mount Olive responded with a 7-2 rn to take a 10-7 lead.
  • A 9-5 run by the Flying Fleet gave Erskine a one-point lead, 16-15, but UMO responded with a 6-1 run that gave the Trojans a 21-17 lead.
  • Erskine went on a 7-1 run putting the score at 24-22, but UMO knotted the score at 24 all following a pair of kills from Iyanu Adebisi and Tobi Azeez.
  • The teams traded the lead four times and tied things up six times before UMO strung together three points to win the opening set 32-30.

SECOND SET

  • UMO took an early 8-3 to begin the second set that included four kills, three Fleet errors and an ace from Azeez.
  • Erskine went on a 7-4 run that put the score at 12-10 with the Trojans leading.
  • A 5-3 Flying Fleet run knotted the score at 15 all but the Trojans turned on the burners to close out the set on a 10-6 run winning set two 25-21.

THIRD SET

  • The teams traded points back and forth as UMO held a 7-5 lead only to have the Flying Fleet take an 8-7 lead after a 3-0 spurt.
  • Mount Olive came back with a 9-4 run to lead 16-12 midway through the set.
  • The Trojans held a six-point lead, 21-15, and reached match point, 24-20, but the Flying Fleet closed the set on a 7-1 run to win the third set 27-25. 

FOURTH SET

  • UMO opened the fourth set with a 7-2 run on two kills, an Azeez ace, and four Fleet errors.
  • Erskine came back to knot the score at 12 all following a 10-5 run led by the Fleet.
  • Mount Olive answered with an 8-3 run taking a 20-15 lead.
  • The Flying Fleet climbed within three but the Trojans held off the home team to win set four 25-21.

Mount Olive returns to the friendly confines of Kornegay Arena for the remainder of March as the team hosts six teams on their home court for the rest of the month. The first of those six teams to visit Kornegay Arena will by the Crimson of Harvard University in a Tuesday mid-week nonconference match-up at 7 p.m.
