MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The Mount Olive Trojans fell to the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College in straight sets on Friday evening in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • After starting the set neck-and-neck the Trojans took a five-point advantage on two kills, one each from Tobi Azeez and Jarrod Ferguson, and three Crusader attack errors that put the score at 9-4 UMO's favor.
  • Mount Olive held on to a six point lead, 19-13, after a 10-9 run that included five Trojan kills, a double block from Eric Visgitis and Azeez, and four BAC errors.
  • Belmont Abbey kept their cool as they eliminated the gap and knotted the score at 20 all following a 7-1 rally by the Crusaders.
  • The teams traded the lead twice and tied the score five times, last at 25 all, before Belmont Abbey scored two points on back-to-back kills to win the opening set 27-25.

SECOND SET

  • Set two began with the teams going point-for-point through the opening twelve serves as the score sat tied at six-all.
  • Three consecutive kills by BAC gave the Crusaders a 9-6 lead into a Mount Olive timeout.
  • Following the timeout, UMO went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-10 lead. The run consisted of two Brad Monaghan aces, two Trojan kills, and an attack error by Belmont Abbey.
  • Throughout the middle part of the set the teams went back and forth trading points and tying the score, last at 20 all following a kill by E. Visgitis.
  • A pair of kills by the Crusaders caused UMO to call their second timeout trailing 22-20.
  • Mount Olive tied the score up at 22 all and then again at 23 all before Belmont Abbey found two points to take set two 25-23.

THIRD SET

  • Abbey took the early 5-2 lead to start off the third set, but Mount Olive came roaring back on a 4-1 run to knot the score at six-all.
  • UMO stayed within a couple of points of BAC as they called a timeout with the score sitting at 14-11 to recollect.
  • Belmont Abbey went on a 5-2 run taking a 19-13 lead and forcing Mount Olive to use their second timeout.
  • The Trojans came back on a 10-5 run of their own to close the gap to one point, 24-23, but Abbey found the final match point to take the third and final set 25-23. Six kills, two from E. Visgitis, two from Iyanu Adebisi, and one each from Ferguson and Luke Vigitis, a Monaghan service ace, a solo block from Ferguson and two errors from Belmont Abbey aided in the run that just came up short.

KEY STATS

  • Tobi Azeez led the Trojan attack with 12 kills on 28 attack attempts.
  • Eric Visgitis hit an impressive 81.8% recording nine kills on 11 attack attemps with no errors.
