MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The Mount Olive Trojans defeated the Royals of Queens University in four sets on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's volleyball action at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C. Seniors Joel Roberts and Brad Monaghan will be recognized prior to the start of the match for their hard work and dedication to the Green and White.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • The teams were fairly evenly matched through the opening half of the set as the score sat knotted at 12 all midway through the set.
  • UMO went on a 6-2 run taking an 18-14 lead as Queens called a timeout to regroup.
  • Coming out of the break, UMO scored four straight on two kills and two Jarrod Ferguson aces to take a 22-14 lead into yet another Queens timeout.
  • Following this break in the action, the Royals put two points on the board as Mount Olive called a timeout, up 24-16, to slow the Royals momentum.
  • Queens scored one more kill but the Trojans found Brad Monaghan for a kill to win the opening set 25-17.

SECOND SET

  • The Trojans got out to an early 6-2 lead and held a 15-9 lead following a 9-7 run forcing Queens to call their first timeout.
  • The Royals steadily climbed back into the game as they led an 11-7 rally pulling within two points, 22-20, forcing Mount Olive to call a timeout.
  • UMO scored two points to Queens one leading 24-21 with the Royals calling a timeout to try and outwit the Trojans in the final serves.
  • Queens found one point but Tobi Azeez came up with a big kill for the Trojans to give UMO a 25-22 set two win and take a 2-0 match lead.

THIRD SET

  • Set three began very much like how the first set started as the teams traded point-for-point all through the middle of the set as the score sat knotted at 15 all following a Royals kills.
  • Queens took a five-point lead, 20-15, on three kills and two Trojan errors following Mount Olive's second called timeout.
  • UMO scored a handful more points in the set but ran out of time as the Royals won set three 25-20.

FOURTH SET

  • A kill by Luke Visgitis gave the Trojans their first three-point lead of the set 6-3.
  • UMO continued to lead Queens as Mount Olive led 19-14 following an attack error by the Royals that capped a 13-11 run.
  • After their own called timeout, the Royals cut the Trojans lead to three, 20-17, forcing UMO to call a timeout.
  • Mont Olive closed out the set on a 5-3 run to win set three 25-20 and the match 3-1.

KEY STATS

  • Tobi Azeez had a good afternoon with 16 kills to lead the Trojan attack and also added 15 digs tying for the lead on defense with Jarrod Ferguson.
  • Luke Visgitis and Jarrod Ferguson each tallied 13 kills in the contest.
  • Ferguson added three service aces with L. Visgitis and Shane Yeo each adding one as well.
  • Yeo set up 53 assists and make two fantastic solo blocks.

The Trojans face the Bobcats on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m., and follow the next day with a 2 p.m. match against the King Tornado on Saturday, April 6.
