Softball Opens Season With Two Wins At Swamp Fox Classic

Carly White tossed a four-hit shutout and Beth Overman went 4-for-4 as Mount Olive opened its season with a 4-0 win over Barton in the Swamp Fox Softball Classic Saturday at Florence, S.C. The Trojans concluded day one of the tournament with a 10-2 victory over Wheeling Jesuit. Freshman pitcher Madison Johnston picked up the win in her collegiate debut.

White (1-0) thwarted a Barton threat in the top of the fourth as the Bulldogs put runners on first and second with nobody out. White got out of the jam on a 5-3 double play and a pop out to the catcher.

Mount Olive (2-0) provided a pair of insurance runs for White in the bottom of the sixth against Barton. Rebekah McDaniel led off with a double and scored on Megan Ready's bunt single past the pitcher. Ready was thrown out at second, but Danielle Mitchell followed with a triple off the right field fence and scored on a passed ball.

White finished with four strikeouts and only one walk. The Mount Olive-Barton game does not count towards the Conference Carolinas standings.

Mount Olive concludes tournament play with two more games Sunday. The Trojans take on Wheeling Jesuit again at 3 p.m., then face tournament host Francis Marion at 5 p.m.
