Trojans Power Past Wheeling Jesuit 12-4 In Day Two Of Swamp Fox Classic

Kalie Smith went 4-for-4, while Jennifer Jones and Christie Wright collected three hits apiece as Mount Olive rode a 19-hit attack for a 12-4 victory over Wheeling Jesuit on day two of the Swamp Fox Classic Sunday at Florence, S.C. Danielle Mitchell, Katie Moore and Beth Overman had two hits apiece as each of the first six Trojans in the lineup notched multi-hit games. In the nightcap against host Francis Marion, Moore slugged a two-run homer, but the hosts put together a pair of big innings to win 7-2.

In Sunday's opener, Wright (1-0) went the distance in the run-rule win, scattering eight hits. She struck out five, walked none and allowed only one earned run in the Trojans' second win over the Cardinals in as many days.

Mount Olive put the game away early, scoring seven runs in the first. The Trojans pounded out eight hits in the frame, including four doubles. Jones and Rebekah McDaniel each drove in a pair, while Jesse Christ and Mitchell singled home runs.

Wheeling Jesuit mounted a rally in the bottom of the second, scoring three unearned runs to close within 8-4. In the third, the Trojans regrouped and pulled away again. Mitchell led off with a single, then came around to score on an Overman triple. Wright followed with an RBI-double, then Jones made it 11-4 with a single.

In the nightcap against Francis Marion, the Trojans (3-1) managed just three hits over the first five innings, falling behind 7-0. In the sixth, Mount Olive made things interesting when Overman delivered a one-out triple, then jogged home on a blast by Moore over the right-centerfield fence.

Patriot pitcher Taylor Luff settled down to retire the final five batters, however, to secure a 4-0 weekend for Francis Marion (4-0).

Mount Olive returns to Florence, S.C. to meet Francis Marion in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
