Mid-South Softball Classic: Trojans Defeat Tusculum, Battle No. 10 Armstrong To Extra Innings

Rebekah McDaniel, Katie Moore and Beth Overman all homered as Mount Olive concluded play in the Mid-South Softball Classic with a 6-2 victory over Tusculum Sunday at Spartanburg, S.C. Carly White tossed a complete game seven-hitter for the win.

Earlier in the day, the Trojans took nationally 10th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State to extra innings before falling 7-2 in eight innings. Overman and Jennifer Jones homered as the Trojans belted five home runs on the day.

Mount Olive (11-5) was scheduled to play two games Saturday, but rain canceled play.

The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first first against Tusculum as Jones drove in two runs with a double. After Tusculum tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, Mount Olive took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning.

McDaniel led off the fourth with her second home run of the season and Overman belted her third of the season - and second of the day - one out later. Christie Wright added an rbi-single to give the Trojans a 5-2 lead.

Moore rounded out the scoring with a leadoff home run in the sixth inning, her second of the season.

White (5-2) struck out six and walked none. She allowed only two hits after the third inning and retired the side in order in the seventh. Trojan third baseman Kalie Smith provided defensive help with two runners on in the sixth, catching a line drive and throwing a runner out at first for an inning-ending double play.

Against Armstrong, Jones put Mount Olive on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first with her second home run of the season. After Armstrong tied the game in the top of the fourth, Overman's solo home run put the Trojans back on top. But Armstrong tied the game in the fifth and erupted for five runs in the eighth.

Mount Olive continues its trip to South Carolina Monday as the Trojans head to Due West to take on Erskine in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader. The Trojans' conference opener was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but pushed up a day due to weather forecasts. Game time is 2 p.m.
