Trojans Win Both Ends Of Conference Softball Doubleheader At Coker

Carly White tossed a six-hit shutout and Beth Overman powered the offense with a triple and a home run as Mount Olive defeated previously conference unbeaten Coker 4-0 in game one of a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader Wednesday at Hartsville, S.C. Overman, who also homered in the second game, had two runs batted in and scored three of the Trojans' four runs.

Mount Olive made it a sweep as the Trojans rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh for a 7-5 victory. Kalie Smith, Jesse Crist and Kassie Lowe all had rbi-singles and the Trojans capitalized on three Coker errors in the inning.

Mount Olive (14-6 overall, 3-1 Conference Carolinas) trailed 4-3 going into the top of the seventh in game two. Katie Moore and Jennifer Jones both reached on errors with one out in the inning. Both runners came home when Smith's single to right was misplayed as the Trojans went on top to stay.

Smith, who had advanced to third on the error, scored on Crist's single. Lowe brought Crist home with a two-out single as Mount Olive took a 7-4 lead.

Trojan relief pitcher Christie Wright (3-0) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the win, allowing only an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Wright struck out three.

Overman's second home run of the day and sixth of the season tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third. Moore's rbi-double in the fifth highlighted a two-run inning as Mount Olive took its first lead of the game. Coker (13-6, 6-1) regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Sydney Weatherford's two-run homer highlighted a three-run inning.

In the opener, White (6-2) struck out three and walked only one for her second shutout of the season. She allowed four hits in the final three innings, but retired the side in order after giving up a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh.

Overman gave White a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as she was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Jones' single. Overman led off the top of the sixth with a triple and came home on Moore's single to extend Mount Olive's lead to 2-0. She capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Overman's two home runs moved her into second in the conference in homers, one behind the leader.

Mount Olive plays its first home contest of the season Saturday as the Trojans play host to King in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader. The Trojans' original home opener in February was rained out. Mount Olive swept last year's doubleheader at King. Game time is 4 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
