Mount Olive Swept At GRU Augusta In Non-Conference Softball Doubleheader

University of Mount Olive was held to one hit in two games as the Trojans were swept by GRU Augusta in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday at Augusta, Ga. The Trojans fell to the Jaguars 5-0 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game.

Mount Olive (9-17) took a 1-0 lead without benefit of a hit in the bottom of the first inning in game two. Beth Overman drew a walk to lead off the game and advanced to second when Ashleigh Mason reached on a fielder's choice. Overman went to third on a groundout and scored on Kalie Smith's rbi-groundout.

Trojan starting pitcher Lauren Smith retired the first seven batters she faced and took a one-hit shutout into the bottom of the fourth until a pair of errors led to four unearned runs and put GRU Augusta (11-14). The Jaguars added three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to seal the run-rule victory.

In the opener, Overman's leadoff single in the top of the seventh broke up a no-hitter and accounted for the Trojans' lone hit of the day.

Mount Olive is idle until next Wednesday when the Trojans play host to Chowan in a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is 4 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
