Tiffany Hawley went 4-for-7 with five RBI to lead the University of Mount Olive to a double header split with Saint Augustine's University Monday afternoon at Buffaloe Road Park in Raleigh, N.C. for non-conference softball. Monday's games were the first for Mount Olive since February 21.
Game One: Mount Olive 3 Saint Augustine's 4
Mount Olive (6-9) started off game one with Taylor Carter reaching first off an error by the third baseman. Carter ended up on third after swiping two bags in a row. Hawley with two away brought the first run for the Trojans home as she reached on an error by the third baseman.
After back-to-back 1-2-3 innings for the Saint Augustine's (5-4), Mount Olive got back to work. Hawley came up in the third with again two away in the inning and this time got scored a run the old fashion way by a solo home run to left field and the Trojans were up 2-0.
The Falcons struck for a run in the fourth off a sacrifice fly by Marley Parker and the first run for Saint Augustine's came across.
Kelsey Akers singled with one away in the fifth as Mount Olive looked to respond. Beth Overman laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Akers to second. Hawley drove Akers in with a single back up the middle to take the Falcons run back.
Saint Augustine's Jasmine Rios doubled to lead off the sixth and then stole third on the next pitch. Deja White drove her in with an RBI-single to right center. White advanced to second on a wild pitch and then proceeded to steal third. Korey Hill reached on an error by the Trojan third baseman and White scored the last run in the sixth to tie the game at three for the Falcons.
Mount Olive was unable to scratch across a run in the seventh and extra innings were needed. In the bottom of the eighth, Rios was the runner on second and she stole third. White drew a walk and Meranda Zanni walked off with a single past the shortstop and Saint Augustine's won in eight innings.
Kayleigh Jonas (0-1) was credited with the loss in relief. She went two innings and allowed one run off three hits and struck out two.
Hannah Stutts (3-1) was the winning pitcher for the Falcons. She went the distance and allowed three runs off six hits and struck out seven.
Game Two: Mount Olive 5 Saint Augustine's 3
In game two Mount Olive (7-9) came out hot as Brooke Kamphuis singled past third to lead off. Kamphuis stole second on a strikeout and Russell drew a one out walk. Hawley brought her bat in game two as she loaded up and cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left center and Mount Olive led early 3-0.
After a 1-2-3 bottom half for Saint Augustine's (5-5), Mount Olive scored a solo run in the second. Ashleigh Mason drew a one out walk and stole second to start the offense. Kamphuis then doubled up the middle and allowed Mason to score. The Trojans were unable to plate anymore in the second.
Lindsey Russell tripled to lead off the third for Mount Olive. Lauren McGrath with one away drove in the final Trojan run as she grounded out and Russell scored to give Mount Olive a 5-0 lead.
The Falcons offense came alive in the third. Akera McPhaul doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a groundout. Taylor Walters reached on a fielder's choice that took our McPhaul at third. White doubled home Walters for the first run. Rios then cleared the bases with a two run home run to straight center field and Saint Augustine's cut the lead to two.
Saint Augustine's was unable to get a runner past second base for the remainder of the game and Mount Olive took game two.
Lauren Smith (3-5) went the distance and picked up the win. She allowed three runs off four hits and struck out six.
Korey Hill (1-2) picked up the loss. She as well went the distance but allowed five runs off seven hits and struck out seven.
Mount Olive remains on the road as the Trojans travel to Central, S.C. to take on Southern Wesleyan on Friday in a doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m.
