Trojan Softball Breaks Two School Records In DH Sweep Of Emmanuel 9-1, 6-0

Freshman Taylor Carter broke the school individual single-season stolen base record and University of Mount Olive broke the team stolen base record as the Trojans celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep over Emmanuel College in Conference Carolinas softball Saturday at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. Carter, who entered Saturday's doubleheader tied for the school record, stole three bases in the opener now holds the record outright with 30 stolen bases. The Trojans stole 11 bases as a team in the twinbill for 131 on the season, beating the previous record of 126.

Both the previous individual and team stolen base records were set in 1996.

Game One: Mount Olive 8 Emmanuel 1

Emmanuel (10-22 Overall, 2-8 Conference Carolinas) struck first after Brittany Abb walked and was driven in with a two out triple down the right field line to take the lead.

Mount Olive (27-16, 12-5) came back in the first as Carter singled to lead off. She made it to third after a stolen base and a wild pitch. Beth Overman singled through the left side and tied the ball game. Overman stole second and scored on a base hit by Savannah Becker. Tiffany Hawley continued the base hits for the Trojans with a poke down the left field line and Becker advanced to second.

Lauren McGrath reached on a fielding error and Becker scored. Lindsey Russell singled through the right side for another run. Erin Brogan grounded out to first but scored McGrath on the backside of the play. Kristin Power singled and moved Russell to third. After a strikeout Carter reached on a fielder's choice and Russell came home. Two more singles finished off the big inning for the Trojans as they jumped out 8-1.

The Trojans were looking to find one more run for the mercy rule but could not find it until the fifth inning. Power singled to lead off the inning. Ashleigh Mason came in to pinch run for Power and stole second. Carter singled past first and moved Mason to third. The next stolen base for Carter set a school record for most swiped bags in a season as she now sits with 28. The record was held by Jennifer Ellis back in 1996. The stolen bag also broke the school team record with 127 stolen bases. The previous record was also held by the 1996 team with 126.

Overman drew a walk and with one away Becker hit a pitch to deep right field deep enough to allow Becker to tag up and give Mount Olive the 9-1 win in five innings.

Lauren Smith (8-7) picked up the win in game one as she went five complete and allowed one run off eight hits and struck out five.

Game Two: Mount Olive - 6 Emmanuel – 0

Mount Olive (28-16, 13-5) McGrath singled up the middle with one away to start the second. After a fly out McGrath stole second. Anna Ingram singled past the shortstop and advanced McGrath to third. Power singled home the first run on a base hit through the left side. Carter singled as well to bring home Ingram and the Trojans led 2-0.

The Trojans added a solo run off a Hawley RBI-single in the third.

Three more runs came home after a back-to-back two out singles allowed Russell to launch a three run home run to secure the win for Madison Johnston (15-3).

Johnston went the complete game and shutout the Lions in game two, only allowing four hits and struck out a pair.

Mount Olive hits the road to complete the Conference Carolinas regular season against Limestone Sunday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
