Madison Johnston tossed a three-hit shutout and Anna Ingram went 4-for-4 to pace University of Mount Olive's 12-hit attack as the Trojans defeated Walsh University 8-0 in six innings at the 2016 Spring Games softball tournament Thursday in Clermont, Fla. Thursday marked the Trojans' final day at the event. Mount Olive finished with a 5-3 record after ending play with a 9-2 loss to University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Johnston (7-5) posted a 3-1 record with one save and a 1.06 earned run average in five appearances and four starts at the Spring Games. Against Walsh, she struck out five and walked none.
Mount Olive (11-13) provided Johnston with all the offense she would need with three runs in the first inning. Savannah Becker doubled in the first run and eventually scored on an error. Kristin Power's rbi-squeeze bunt capped the scoring.
Jazmin Montgomery singled in a run in the third and Ingram had an rbi-single in a two-run fourth inning to extend Mount Olive's lead to 6-0. Kayla Allen and Ingram opened a two-run sixth inning with back-to-back singles as the Trojans took an eight-run lead.
After having retired the side in order in the fifth, Johnston overcame a two-out error in the bottom of the sixth to seal the run-rule victory.
Mount Olive plays the first of five consecutive home dates Wednesday as the Trojans play host to Saint Augustine's in a non-conference doubleheader. Second-year Trojan head coach Mandy Sansbury enters Wednesday's doubleheader one victory away from reaching the 100-win mark. First pitch is 2 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
