University of Mount Olive split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader Monday afternoon against Southern Wesleyan 8-0, 4-0 at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C. Mount Olive had a home run in the first three innings in the 6-0 game one win.
Game One: Mount Olive 8 Southern Wesleyan 0
Mount Olive (15-15 Overall, 3-3 Conference Carolinas) started off game one in power fashion. Savannah Becker scored the opening run of the game with a one out home run to left. The Trojans continued the long ball attack in the second inning as Caitlin Ewers went deep to lead off the inning.
Leading 2-0, Mount Olive went three straight innings with a home run as Anna Ingram homered to lead off the third. The Trojans were unable to continue the home run per inning trend in the fourth as Mount Olive was retired in order.
In the fifth however, the Trojans exploded for three more runs. An RBI-single by JenniBeth Burge plated the fourth run for Mount Olive. Kelsey Akers came up with two away and drove home Kristin Powers and Kelly Huffman to push the Trojan lead to 6-0.
Mount Olive went into the bottom of the sixth looking to end the game early as Jazmin Montgomery singled to lead-off the inning. Montgomery then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a pop out, Callie Ferrell singled and moved Montgomery to third. After Ferrell stole second, both runners advanced on a wild pitch.
The game-winning run came across on a wild pitch and Mount Olive took game one by the mercy run rule.
Madison Johnston (9-5) picked up the win in game one after going all six innings allowing just four hits and struck out three in the shutout.
Game Two: Mount Olive 0 Southern Wesleyan 4
Game two was all Southern Wesleyan (13-17, 2-6) as the Trojans were stranded to just four hits in the game. The Warriors plated three runs in the top of the sixth to seal the win in the nightcap and took the doubleheader split.
Mount Olive will host Fayetteville State this Thursday. The non-conference doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m. from Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
