Mount Olive Sweeps Fayetteville State

University of Mount Olive swept a double header from Fayetteville State 2-1, 5-0 Thursday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in non-conference softball from Mount Olive, N.C.

Game One: Mount Olive-2 Fayetteville State-1

Mount Olive (16-15) was in the hole early as Fayetteville State's (9-9) Haley Wood reached on throwing error by the Trojan third baseman. Wood advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Freeman. After two walks another error by the Trojans allowed the Broncos sole run to score.

It took Mount Olive until the bottom of the sixth to respond back. Savannah Becker led off the inning with a base hit into right center. Following a fly out, Anna Ingram drew a walk and Becker moved to second. Madison Stewart came up and got the clutch hit for Mount Olive.

Stewart's singled dropped into right center and scored Becker from second. However a collision at the plate allowed not only Becker to score, but also Ingram to come around from first to give the Trojans the 2-1 lead.

Mount Olive shut down Fayetteville state in the top of the seventh not allowing a comeback.

Julie Hodges (6-3) picked up the win in relief pitching the final five innings and did not allow a run and surrendered a single hit, while striking out three.

In the night cap it was all Mount Olive (17-15) as the Trojans got on the board first in the third. Becker drew a one out walk to give the Trojans a base runner. Kayla Sllen singled into left center and moved Becker to second. Both runners moved into scoring position following a fly out and a stolen base. Jazmin Montgomery reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, which allowed Becker to score the game's first run.

Cailtin Ewers scored the second Trojan run with an RBI-groundout. Charlene Thompson singled past the diving Bronco shortstop to continue the threat. Thompson stole second on the next play to put herself in scoring position. Kelsey Akers picked up an RBI-double and moved Mount Olive up 3-0.
