University of Mount Olive capped off the 2016 regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Barton 9-2, 9-0 in Conference Carolinas softball in Wilson, N.C.
Mount Olive's (30-18 Overall, 16-6 Conference Carolinas) big inning in game one came in the fifth as the Trojans had a 3-1 lead. Kelsey Akers doubled to lead off the inning. Anna Ingram drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI-single that scored Akers from third. Callie Ferrell picked up two RBI on a single to left. Caitlin Ewers scored one and had a second run come across on an error and Mount Olive led 8-1.
Barton (19-24, 7-13) struck for a single run in th bottom of the sixth as Samantha Bass singled past second to bring home Rachel Jordan.
The Trojans answered back in the top of the seventh in what would be the final run of the game as Ewers' sacrifice fly gave Mount Olive a 9-2 cushion. Despite surrendering a lead-off walk Mount Olive was able to retire the next three Barton batters in order and took game one.
Madison Johnston (16-7) picked up the win as she went the distance allowing two runs off six hits and struck out six.
Game Two was all Mount Olive. The Trojans struck first in the top of the second. Ewers, Brooke Kamphuis, and Kayla Allen all picked up RBI-singles to give Mount Olive a 3-0 lead.
Mount Olive went on to add four runs in the top of the fourth. Two Barton error and an RBI-single by Ingram resulted in the Trojan lead increasing to seven. Kristin Power gave Mount Olive the final runs it needed to put the Trojans ahead by nine.
The Bulldogs tried to come back in the bottom of the fifth as they were able to get a lead-off single, however, the Trojans closed the door and won game to by the mercy rule.
Julie Hodges (11-6) picked up the complete game win as she allowed just one hit over her five innings of work and struck out a pair.
