Mount Olive, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive softball team swept Virginia State University, 9-1 (6 innings) and 16-8 (6 innings), to earn a pair of victories on opening day at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME ONE

  • After Kristin Power singled to left field and Callie Ferrell was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first, Kayla Allen stepped to the plat and smacked a two-run double to left field to push the Trojans ahead 2-0.
  • UMO was not done in the first as Allen crossed home on a wild pitch by VSU to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead.
  • Once again, Allen increased UMO's lead with a single that trickled into shallow left field and scored Power to give UMO a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the second.
  • The Trojans pushed their lead to 6-0 later in the second on a pair of RBI singles.
  • Virginia State scored its lone run in the third to cut Mount Olive's lead to 6-1, but the Trojans responded with a pair of runs in the tallies in the fifth.
  • In the sixth, Allen struck again for UMO with an RBI triple to right field that scored Ferrell and ended the game as the Trojans took the opening contest, 9-1, via the eight run rule.

GAME TWO

  • Mount Olive exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 9-1 lead.
  • The Trojans were stymied by VSU until the fifth inning as Virginia State trimmed UMO's lead to just 9-7.
  • In the fifth, UMO struck for five runs with two coming on wild pitches to provide the Trojans with a 14-7 cushion.
  • UMO ended the game in the sixth with a pair of runs, capped off by an RBI double by Karen Foley that scored Charlene Thompson in the Trojans' 16-8 second game win.

KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Allen powered the Trojans in the opening game as the Benson, N.C. native went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a pair of runs.
  • Caitlin Ewers and Danielle Myers each added RBIs for the Trojans.
  • UMO stole four bases in the contest with Power leading the way with two.
