Trojans Walk-Off In Game Two To Split Against Chowan Univerisity

Mount Olive, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive softball team split a pair of games to Chowan University, 3-0 and 6-5 (W), on Wednesday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME ONE

  • Mount Olive surrendered the first run in the top of the fifth. Following a lead-off walk, Chowan's Tina White doubled to right and plated Katrina Simmons.
  • Brittany Parson put the game out of reach as the Hawks' left fielder pushed two runs home extending Chowan's lead to 3-0.
  • UMO only managed two base runners during the game both coming in the fifth inning.

KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Karen Foley (0-1) picked up the loss in the circle going four and two-thirds allowing one run off two hits and surrendering five walks.
  • Chowan's Kayla Robbins (2-3) picked up the win tossing a complete game no-hitter against the Trojans with just one walk and one hit batter given up.

GAME TWO

  • Mount Olive fell behind early as the Hawks picked up four straight hits including a two RBI single by Parson as Chowan opened up a 2-0 lead. A sacrifice fly to the following Hawks batter pushed home the final run of the inning as Chowan went up by three.
  • Chowan added two more runs in the top of the third to extend the lead to 5-0
  • Eileen Barrera gave UMO a spark with a lead-off single past second. Thompson came into run for Barrera and ended up at third after stealing second and advancing to third on a sacrifice fly. JenniBeth Burge pushed Thompson home on a RBI single to third and UMO trailed 5-1.
  • Kayla Allen started the bottom of the fourth with a single into right. The bases became loaded after two walks. Ferrell worked out the thrid walk of the inning that allowed Allen to walk home and move the Chowan lead to 5-2.
  • The Trojans had an opportunity to push more runs across in the bottom of the fifth as they had the bases loaded with no one out but were unable to score.
  • Barrera singled to lead-off the bottom of the sixth. The Trojans then executed two perfect bunt singles to load the bases. A fielding error by the Hawks allowed Barrera to score and the Trojans trailed 5-3.
  • A wild pitch allowed Mount Olive to come within a single run but were unable to add the tying run as the inning came to an end.
  • The comeback of the game happened in the bottom of the seventh with the Trojans up against the wall. Karen Foley led off the inning with a single through the left side. Alexis Hobson came in to pinch run for Foley. Hobson then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anna Ingram.
  • Following a passed ball Barrera singled up the middle to drive in the tying run in Hobson as the game was knotted 5-5.
  • Barrera then stole second to move herself into scoring position.
  • Callie Ferrell came up with the walk-off base hit as she drove a pitch into left center for the RBI double and Mount Olive won game two 6-5.

KEY STATS GAME 2

  • Ferrell led the Trojans as she went 2-3 with two RBI, including the walk-off hit, for UMO.
  • Barrera also chipped in with a 3-4 performance with a RBI and Burge went 2-3 with a RBI.
  • Emily Chaisson (1-1) picked up the win as she went four and two thirds allowing three hits and struck out two.

Mount Olive will hit the road for the Trojans' first road contest of the season on February 11. UMO will play Wingate Unversity in a double-header in Wingate, N.C. scheduled for 1 & 3 p.m.
