Wingate, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive softball team split a pair of games with Wingate University, 6-1 and 2-1 (Win, 8 inn.), on Saturday afternoon in Wingate, North Carolina.

GAME ONE

  • In the top of the first the Trojans put a pair of runners on base but could not push them across.
  • Wingate struck first in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by Jessica VonCannon.
  • UMO pulled back within a run in the top of the third as freshman Kelsey Hayes flied out to center field and sophomore Callie Ferrell scored on a Wingate throwing error.
  • The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to take the 6-1 victory.

KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Karen Foley (0-2) picked up the loss in the circle going four innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three.
  • UMO's Hayes went two-for-four at the plate to lead the Trojans.
  • Mount Olive stranded eight runners on base while Wingate left six on base.

GAME TWO

  • The first five and a half innings past by without any runs coming across before Wingate pushed across its first run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI triple to center by Olivia Smith.
  • UMO answered in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly RBI by senior JenniBeth Burge that sent home freshman Mikayla Koch.
  • Wingate loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but freshman Emily Chaisson was able to induce a ground ball to end the inning.
  • In the top of the eighth, the international tiebreak rule placed Hayes on second and junior Kayla Allen laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance Hayes to third.
  • Junior Anna Ingram stepped to the plate with one out and doubled to left center to bring home Hayes and give UMO the 2-1 lead in the eighth.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Chaisson sat the Bulldogs down in order to secure the 2-1 extra inning victory for the Trojans.

KEY STATS GAME 2

  • Chaisson (2-1) earned her second victory this season with a complete game, pitching eight innings and allowing just one run on five hits and striking out one.
  • Ingram led UMO at the plate, going two-for-three with the game-winning RBI.
