Mount Olive, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive softball team split a pair of games with Winston-Salem State University, 11-4 and 10-2 (W, 5 innings), on Thursday evening at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME ONE

  • The Rams struck first in the top of the first on a two-run home run that put Winston-Salem State ahead 2-0.
  • Answering right back, UMO pushed across a run in the bottom half of the first on a sacrifice by senior JenniBeth Burge that scored freshman Kelsey Hayes to cut the Trojans' deficit to 2-1.
  • The Trojans tied it up in the second as junior Kristin Power doubled to left field to score sophomore Callie Ferrell.
  • WSSU exploded for four runs in the top of third on a RBI double and a pair of RBI singles that gave the Rams a 6-2 advantage.
  • Junior Anna Ingram doubled down the left field line to score Burge and sophomore Charlene Thompson to push the Trojans back within two runs at 6-4 heading into the fourth inning.
  • WSSU shut down Mount Olive in the following four innings while tallying five more runs in route to the Rams' 11-4 win.

 KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Freshman Karen Foley (0-3) picked up the loss in the circle going 2.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on three hits and striking out one.
  • Ingram led Mount Olive with a 1-for-2 outing, with a pair of RBIs and reaching base once via a hit-by-pitch.

GAME TWO

  • The Trojans reversed their fortunes early on in game two, as UMO scored five times in the bottom of the first.
  • Power got the hit parade started for Mount Olive with a single up the middle that scored Thompson.
  • Ferrell then knocked in a pair of runs on a single that brought Power home and scored Ingram on a throwing error.
  • Freshman Emily Chaisson drove home the final two runs of the first, as Chaisson's single scored Burge and Ferrell crossed home on a WSSU fielding error.
  • WSSU trimmed UMO's lead to four at 5-1 with a run in the top of the second.
  • The Trojans responded with a pair of RBI singles by Power and Ingram that gave Mount Olive a 7-1 lead heading into the third.
  • A triple by Hayes pushed the Trojans' lead to 8-1 in the fourth and a home run, the first of the season for UMO, by junior Alexis Hobson gave Mount Olive a 10-1 advantage.
  • The Rams attempted to prolong the contest in the fifth by tallying a run, but WSSU could not draw any closer as UMO captured the 10-2 victory in five innings via the eight-run rule.

KEY STATS GAME 2

  • Chaisson (3-1) continued to impress in the circle, as the freshman picked up the complete game victory, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out three.
  • Power led Mount Olive, going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, two runs, and a walk in the win.
  • Eight of the nine Trojan batters recorded a hit with three, Thompson, Power, and Ingram, recording two.
