UMO Sweeps King As Trojans Support Faith.Fight.Frost Initiative

Mount Olive, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of King University, 2-0 and 6-5, in Conference Carolinas action on Sunday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME ONE

  • The Trojans scored first in the bottom of the third as junior Kayla Allen doubled to left center field scoring sophomore Charlene Thompson to put UMO ahead, 1-0.
  • UMO added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as junior Kristin Power stole second, inducing a throw to try and catch her, and freshman Mikayla Koch stole home on the throw, scoring and giving the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
  • Junior Kylie Ward continued her strong performance in the circle in the top of the seventh as Ward sat the Tornado down in order, securing the 2-0 victory for UMO.

KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Allen led the way for UMO at the plate, going three-for-three with a RBI in the win.
  • In the circle, Ward (W: 8-5) earned the victory, pitching a complete seven-inning shutout, allowing five hits in the win.

GAME TWO

  • King scored quickly to open the second game, as the Tornado pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the first.
  • UMO answered with a run in the bottom half of the first as junior Anna Ingram hit a sacrifice fly that scored Thompson and trimmed King's lead to 2-1.
  • The Trojans tied the game in the third inning with a RBI single up the middle by Allen that drove in Thompson.
  • Threatening in the fourth, King loaded the bases with two outs, but freshman Emily Chaisson induced a fly out to center field to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, UMO broke the tie with three runs as Allen doubled to left center to score Power and Thompson and Ingram doubled to send home Allen to give the Trojans a 5-2 advantage.
  • The Tornado added a run in the top of the fifth to trim the Trojans' lead to 5-3.
  • King tied the game again in the top of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs before freshman Karen Foley came on in relief and ended the threat with a strikeout.
  • UMO took the lead in the seventh with another RBI double from Allen that scored freshman Kelsey Hayes and gave the Trojans a 6-5 lead.
  • Foley slammed the door on any hope for a Tornado rally, sitting King down in order to earn the 6-5 win for UMO.

KEY STATS GAME 2

  • Allen continued her perfect day at the plate with a four-for-four performance with four RBIs and a run scored in UMO's victory.
  • Karen Foley (W: 3-9) earned the victory, pitching 1.2 innings in relief without allowing a hit and striking out one batter. 

NOTABLES

  • The Trojans wore special warmups adorned with the "Faith.Fight.Frost" logo to support University of Indianapolis softball head coach Melissa Frost in her fight against breast cancer and those who are fighting breast cancer around the world. UMO joined 43 other universities and high school teams around the nation in supporting the initiative this weekend.
