FLORENCE, S.C. - The University of Mount Olive softball team dropped both games in the season opener to Francis Marion University on Friday afternoon in Florence, S.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Francis Marion got on the scoreboard first as left fielder Taylor DeLeon advanced to third on a triple to centerfield scoring the three runners on base giving FMU a 3-0 lead.
  • The Trojans scored a run in the top of the fifth as Callie Ferrell tripled to right center driving in Mikayla Koch, who came in as a pinch-runner for Alexis Oliver after she singled up the middle.
  • The Patriot lead grew back to three runs as the catcher Welty hit a home run over the left field wall putting the score at 4-1.
  • Alexis Hobson came to the plate in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded and was walked by the Patriot pitcher allowing Heather Childress to score an unearned run pulling the Trojans within two runs.
  • Two batters later Alyssa Pickle came into the game to pinch hit for Eileen Barrera with the bases still loaded and cranked a home run over the left-center wall giving UMO a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth.
  • The Patriots had to play catch up as their third baseman homered over the centerfield wall to pull back within a run of the Trojans.
  • UMO was held off the board in the top of the seventh but a walk-off walk with the bases loaded gave Francis Marion the 7-6 win in the bottom of the seventh.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The Patriots bats remained hot as the second game of the doubleheader started off with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead over the Trojans.
  • Alexis Hobson reached first on a fielders choice that allowed Callie Ferrell to score in the top of the fourth as UMO trailed FMU 4-1.
  • Francis Marion put up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth spurred by a home run that drove in two runners to give the Patriots the 7-1 lead.
  • Five runs in the top of the fifth pulled the Trojans within one, 7-6, as Kristin Power, Childress, Ferell, Kayla Allen and Hobson all scored runs. The five run inning was highlighted by Hobson's two run homer over the right-field wall that drove Allen into home plate.
  • The Patriots brought home two runs in the bottom of the fifth growing their lead to three, 9-6, that they held the remainder of the game to sweep the Trojans.
