HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The University of Mount Olive softball team split on day one of the Cobra Invitational. The Trojans defeated the Battlers of Alderson-Broadus 11-0 as the game was called after five innings due to collegiate mercy rules. The host Cobras came out in game two of the day to defeat the Trojans 3-1 splitting the day for Mount Olive.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Mount Olive pounced on the boards early as the Trojans plated three runs with Alexis Oliver doubling to left field scoring two runs and Eileen Barrera singled to score Oliver.
  • The Trojans bats remained hot as UMO had four runners cross the plate in the top of the second. Charlene Thompson scored two on a double while Kayla Allen helped Thompson score on a triple and Allen advanced to home on a passed ball.
  • Two more runs in the top of the third gave UMO the 9-0 lead after Thompson hit in herself and Heather Childress for two unearned runs.
  • After a scoreless fourth the Trojans earned two more runs from Emily Statzer and Childress to win the game in five innings 11-0.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The second game of the day started with two scoreless innings before the Coker Cobras scored a solo run in the top of the third.
  • The Trojans evened up the score in the bottom of the third as Allen advanced to second following the Coker error to help Kristin Power score.
  • Coker scored twice more, in the top fifth and sixth innings, while keeping the Trojans off the board the remainder of the game to win 3-1.

KEY STATS

  • Charlene Thompson led the day with two runs, three hits and five RBI's in seven at-bats.
  • Kayla Allen tallied two runs, three hits and two RBI's over the two games in six at-bats.
  • Megan Mills (1-0) picked up the win for game one pitching four innings facing 13 batters striking out three, walking two and allowing one hit.
  • Mallory Ratcliff (1-1) took the loss against Coker allowing nine hits, three runs, all earned, while striking out three batters and walking five.

NOTES
The Trojans return to action on Sunday, February 18, as they complete day two of the Cobra Invitational. Mount Olive faces Alderson Broadus at 10 a.m. and follows with a 2:15 p.m. game against Coker to wrap up the weekend.
