MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive softball team dropped both games in the doubleheader against the Saints of Flagler College on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Flagler opened the contest with a pair of runs in the top of the first that gave the Saints a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Trojans responded by scoring three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead over Flagler College. Kayla Allen crossed the plate for the first run, following Alexis Oliver getting hit by a pitch while the bases were loaded. Callie Ferrell and Anna Ingram gave Mount Olive the 3-2 lead as they ran home following a double to centerfield by Eileen Barrera.
  • Mount Olive's lead was short-lived as the Saints' bats came alive in the top of the second and third innings when they scored 10 total runs, five in each inning, going up 12-3.
  • The Saints defense held off the Trojans while their offense added two more runs in the top of the fifth to end the game with a 14-3 score in five innings due to collegiate mercy rules.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Flagler carried the momentum from game one into game two as they scored all 12 of their runs before Mount Olive got a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Barrera claimed her first RBI of game two as she drove Charlene Thompson home on a single to centerfield.
  • The Trojans held Flagler scoreless in the top of the fifth and fought to make a comeback in the bottom half of the inning as they scored three runs to cut the lead to eight runs, 12-4.
  • Amari Borrego scored a run after Heather Childress hit a single to second base for the first run of the inning. Mikayla Koch followed her home as Oliver was walked with bases loaded. The final run of the inning came from Thompson who crossed home plate after another Barrera single drove in the run.

KEY STATS

  • Barrera tallied two hits in three at-bats driving in two RBI's. 
  • Talyor Wadell (L: 1-1) took the loss as she gave up nine runs on five hits, with six walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched.

NOTES
Mount Olive returns to action tomorrow, March 28, as the team travels to Belmont, N.C., to face the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey in a series that was rescheduled due to weather. Game one of the doubleheader between the Trojans and Crusaders begins at 2 p.m.
