BELMONT, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive softball team split their two games in the doubleheader at Belmont Abbey College on Wednesday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action in Belmont, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The Trojans got the scoring going first in the top of the third inning as neither team scored in the opening two frames. Callie Ferrell brought home the first RBI as she singled to the catcher on a bunt that scored Kayla Allen from third. Charlene Thompson scored the second run on a fielding error by the third baseman.
  • Belmont Abbey scored a solo home run in the bottom of the third to put the score at 2-1 with UMO holding the lead.
  • The Crusaders took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored four runs going up 5-2, ultimately claiming the win.

KEY STATS

  • Mallory Ratcliff (L: 7-6) took the loss as she gave up four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
  • Ferrell got the lone RBI, while Allen and Thompson both scored runs.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Neither team scored in the opening four innings as both teams played very defensive games. 
  • Mount Olive put up the lone run of the game in the top of the fifth as Ferrell ran home on a single up the middle by Alexis Oliver.

KEY STATS

  • Oliver earned an RBI as she scored Ferrell. 
  • Emily Chaisson (W: 4-6) picked up the win pitching a full seven innings giving up five hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

Mount Olive returns to action on Tuesday, April 3, as they travel to Winston Salem, N.C. for a two-game non-conference series against Winston-Salem State University. The Trojans and Rams take to the field for game one at 2 p.m. with a second game to follow around 4 p.m.
