Trojans Take Two From Warriors

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive softball team swept the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C. The Trojans won both games with walk-off singles to improve their season record to 20-24, 7-9.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Southern Wesleyan took the early 1-0 lead as the Warriors scored on a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the first inning.
  • Mount Olive tied the score at one-all in the bottom of the second as Anna Ingram advanced Eileen Barrera to third on a sacrifice bunt and Barrera scored on a throwing error by the first baseman.
  • SWU took a 2-1 lead as Mallory Ratcliff walked in a run for the Warriors in the top of the third.
  • UMO tied the game up again at two-all in the bottom of the third inning as Kayla Allen scored on a throwing error by the third baseman.
  • The Trojans secured the win with a walk-off single by Allen in the top of the seventh inning that scored Kristin Power to win 3-2.

KEY STATS

  • Allen scored one run on three hits in three at-bats while also driving in the game-winning RBI.
  • Mallory Ratcliff (W: 10-9) pitched a full seven innings giving up two runs on three hits while striking out six and walking seven.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Allen continued to roll as she started the second game with her 12th career triple to take over first in the UMO Softball records for career triples. She scored a few plays later as Heather Childress hit into a sacrifice groundout that gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • SWU scored in the top of the fifth on a fielding error by Kristin Power knotting the game up at one-all.
  • Much like the ending of the first game, the Trojans took the contest down to the wire, scoring the game-winning run on a walk-off single by Taylor Waddell that scored Amari Borrego in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 2-1.

KEY STATS

  • Taylor Waddell recorded the walk-off single to help the Trojans win 2-1.
  • Emily Chaisson (W: 5-6) picked up the win by pitching a full seven innings giving up a solo run on seven hits while walking one and striking out three.

Mount Olive returns to Nancy Chapman Cassell Field on Saturday, April 14, as they host North Greenville University in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader. The Trojans and Crusaders square off at 1 p.m. for game one. Prior to the contest, the Trojans will recognize their five seniors in a Senior Day Ceremony.
