MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive softball team swept both games of the doubleheader against the Bulldogs of Barton College on Wednesday evening in Conference Carolinas action at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C. A Kayla Allen triple ion the bottom of the seventh inning of game two gave the Trojans a walk-off come from behind win to complete the sweep and end the regular season with a pair of wins.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The game opened with three very defensive innings as both teams went three-up, three-down to start the game.
  • The Trojans finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as an Alexis Oliver double to center field cleared the bases scoring three runs to put UMO ahead 3-0.
  • Two more defensive innings followed the bottom of the fourth but the Bulldogs gained momentum in the top of the seventh as they opened the inning with back-to-back doubles scoring their first run of the game.
  • Barton hit into three straight outs as the Trojans went on to win game one 3-1.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Mount Olive got the scoring started again in game two as Anna Ingram came home on an Alexis Oliver groundout to the first-baseman in the bottom of the second inning. Ingram initially got on base on a double to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch putting her 60 feet from home plate.
  • Barton took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third off a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly RBI.
  • Neither team scored for another three innings until the Trojans scored their second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kayla Allen after advancing to third on a single, a passed ball and a Charlene Thompson groundout, ran home following a Heather Childress single to center field.
  • The Trojan defense held the Bulldogs scoreless in the top of the seventh inning despite Barton having the bases loaded.
  • UMO came back in the bottom half of the inning as Alyssa Pickle hit a double to centerfield that scored Alexis Hobson from first base. Mikayla Koch went in to pinch run for Pickle and Koch scored the following play as Kayla Allen hit a triple to left centerfield to win the game in a come-from-behind fashion.

KEY STATS

  • Allen had three hits in four at-bats with a run and an RBI as well as a pair of triples in the game.
  • Emily Chaisson (W: 6-7) pitched all seven innings giving up three runs on 10 hits and striking out three batters, including one strikeout to end an inning with bases loaded.
