UMO Softball Sweeps Chowan University In Home Doubleheader

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive softball team swept both games in the doubleheader to the Hawks of Chowan University on Wednesday afternoon.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The first game of the day was started off in style as Charlene Thompson singled through the left side.
  • Cassandra Lassiter following a groundout plated the first run with an RBI-double and Eileen Barrera added a second with an RBI-single up the middle to give UMO a 2-0 lead.
  • Another Lassiter RBI base hit scored the third Trojan run in the bottom of the second.
  • The Trojans added another single run in the third on a fielder's choice and moved ahead of the Chowan Hawks 4-0.
  • Thompson pushed home two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Amber Parker and Amber Elliott scored to give the Trojans a 6-0 advantage heading into the sixth. 
  • Chowan was finally able to notch a run in the top of the sixth on a Beth Walker RBI-double but that was as much as the Hawks would manage as they fell 6-1.
  • Haley Brogden (2-1) got the win in the circle for UMO going seven complete innings allowing one run off four hits and struck out 11.
  • Thompson led the Trojans' offense going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Game two saw an explosion of offense from the Trojans as Mount Olive plated seven runs. 
  • The scoring was highlighted by RBI base hits from Hannah Burress, Madison Morgan, and Charlene Thompson
  • Burress pushed across another run in the bottom of the second on an RBI-double to left center to extend the lead to 8-0.
  • After adding a run in the third, UMO went on to add more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth by pushing across three more runs, highlighted by a Burress lead-off home run to left center.
  • Chowan had no luck finding any offense in the fifth and Mount Olive took game two by the mercy rule 12-0.
  • Emily Chaisson (1-0) got the win in the circle in relief as she went three and two-thirds of scoreless softball allowing just two hits and struck out one.
  • Buress led the Trojans with three RBI on the heels of her 3-for-3 performance from the plate.

Mount Olive is on the road this weekend for their first contest away from their home field this season in Greenville, Tenn. The Trojans will face the Pioneers of Tusculum University Saturday, February 9, in a 2 and 4 p.m. doubleheader at J.C. Red Edmonds Field.
