MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Mount Olive softball swept their nonconference doubleheader against the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston (W.Va.) on Monday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The game opened on a very good defensive front as neither team found a run through the opening two innings with the first hit occurring in the top of the third by the Golden Eagles.
  • Mount Olive got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fourth as Eileen Barrera hit a bomb over the left field wall to clear the two runners for three RBI's. Cassandra Lassiter scored on the HR as well as Mikayla Koch, who went in to pinch run for Alexis Oliver after reaching first base on balls. Lassiter reached base on an error from the third baseman and then stole second.
  • UMO's defense kept UC to a three-up, three-down top of the fifth while the offense added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning to give the Trojans a 4-0 cushion. Amber Elliott scored the fourth run for Mount Olive after singling to left field, stealing second, advancing to third on a Callie Ferrell SAC bunt and crossing the plate on an error during a Heather Childress at-bat.
  • The Trojans held the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh to win game one 4-0.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • After a quick three-up, three-down top of the first inning for UC, the Trojans started the game with a bang scoring four runs on five hits. Charlene Thompson reached base on a single through the right side and then stole second with Ferrell at the plate. A triple by Ferrell to right field scored Thompson for the first run and Ferrell followed her home on a wild pitch to put UMO up 2-0.
  • Barrera and Oliver both singled in their at-bats and advanced to third and second on a passed ball. A Hannah Burress single to left scored Barrera and then a fielders choice by Madison Morgan scored Oliver that put the score at 4-0 to end the inning.
  • The Trojans tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third with Barrera and Koch crossing home that increased the score to 6-0. Barrera reached base on a standup double to left-center who reached third on a groundout by Oliver after the third baseman struggled to decide who to throw out. Koch came in to pinch run for Hannah Burress who reached on a walk and the pair scored on a double to center field by Madison Morgan.
  • The Golden Eagles found their first run of the day after a double to left field scored the runner from second to cut the Trojan lead to five runs, 6-1 in the top of the fourth.
  • After a quiet fifth inning, the Trojans scored three runs in the bottom of the six to go up by eight runs and win the game 9-1. Lassiter and Childress both scored on wild pitch opportunities and Morgan scored on a single from Thompson after advancing to third on the wild pitch that scored Lassiter.
