Mount Olive Takes Two Against Millersville To Complete Weekend With 4-0 Sweep

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Mount Olive softball completed the weekend sweep with a pair of wins over the Marauders of Millersville University in the nonconference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Heather Childress got the Trojans on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning after reaching base on a double to left field. She advanced to third on a passed ball and came home following a double to center field by Eileen Barrera.
  • UMO took a 2-0 lead after Callie Ferrell crosse the plate in the bottom second. Ferrell reached on a walk, advanced to second on a Charlene Thompson single and was batted home by Childress who hit her second double of the game, again to left field.
  • Thompson crossed home for the third run of the game, and second of the second inning, as Barerra singled to second base. Childress, while trying to go home, was tagged out at third on a 625 throwout on the play, after Thompson scored.
  • Hannah Burress led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run that hit the fair side of the left field foul pole for the only score of the inning that gave UMO a 4-0 lead.
  • Childress' third double of the game came in the bottom of the sixth and scored Ferrell for the final run of the game. Ferrell pinch ran for Megan Bryant, who came in to pinch hit for Ferrell and reached base on balls.

KEY STATS

  • Heather Childress had three doubles in the game in four at-bats and scored two RBI's while also crossing the plate once herself.
  • Eileen Barrera tallied two RBI's in the game and was the only other Trojan to hit a double.
  • Hannah Buress' homer in the sixth was the freshman catchers second of her collegiate career.
  • Haley Brogden (W:5-4) pitched all seven innings giving up four hits and two walks while striking out eight of 25 batters faced.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Thompson scored the opening run of the second game as she reached first on a field error by the pitcher and stole her way to third before being hit in by Childress who singled to right field.
  • Childress found her way around the bases following a passed ball and a ground out by Burress and crossed the plate on a wild pitch that game UMO a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
  • The Marauders found their first run of the day in the top of the second inning as a Millersville batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored a run as everyone advanced a base.
  • Mount Olive took a three-nil lead in the bottom second as Breanna Voelker crossed home plate following a throwing error during a Thompson at-bat.
  • Three more runs found their way onto the scoreboard for the Trojans in the bottom of the fourth as Amber Elliott, Childress and Burress all crossed the plate for runs. Elliott rounded the bases after singling to the left side and scored on a Childress double to left field. A double by Burress down the left field line scored Childress and after advancing to third on a passed ball, Burress came home on a single from Barrera through the right side.
  • The Marauders got a solo homer in the top of the sixth but their bats remained cold as the Trojans won the second game 6-2.

  • Childress recorded three hits in four at-bats for two RBI's and scored twice herself.
  • Burress tallied two hits in her three at-bats, batting in one run and scoring once as well.
  • Elliott, Voelker, and Thompson all combined for the other three runs.
  • Emily Chaisson (W: 3-1) pitched all seven innings giving up two runs on seven hits including the solo home run while walking three and striking out six.

Mount Olive returns to action a on Wednesday, March 13, as they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on the Rams of Winston-Salem State University. The Trojans and Rams will meet for first pitch of the doubleheader at 2 p.m. with game two to start approximately around 4 p.m.
