GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Mount Olive Trojans softball team swept the Saints of Limestone College in the first Conference Carolinas doubleheader of the season for the Trojans on Saturday afternoon at Babe Ruth Field in Gaffney, S.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Both teams recorded one hit each in the first but neither scored a run.
  • Mount Olive found the first run of the game in the top of the second as Alyssa Pickle rounded the bases to give UMO a 1-0 lead. Pickle reached on a single through the left side, advanced to second after Alexis Oliver was walked and ran home following a Callie Ferrell single to right field that scored the RBI.
  • The Trojans held the Saints scoreless in the second and third innings while adding an insurance run in the top of the fourth as Ferrell again earned the RBI with a double down the left field line that scored Amber Elliott who reached on a single to the catcher.
  • UMO kept Limestone off of the scoreboard through the fourth, fifth, and sixth but gave up a solo run in the bottom of the seventh as a single to shortstop scored the runner from second putting the final score at 2-1 and keeping the Saints from being shutout in game one.

KEY STATS

  • Callie Ferrell recorded both RBI's in the game on two hits in her three at-bats.
  • Alyssa Pickle and Amber Elliott each scored a single run.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The Trojans carried the momentum from game one into the second game as they put up two runs in the top of the first inning of game two.
  • Charlene Thompson got on base after a single to the second baseman and shortly after stole second. Thompson went home after a single down the right-field line by Heather Childress who advanced to second on the throw.
  • Childress reached third on a wild pitch and then stole home during an Eileen Barrera at-bat.
  • UMO held Limestone off the scoreboard in the first and second but the Saints found a run in the bottom of the third on a double that scored the runner from second.
  • The remainder of the game was a defensive battle between the teams as neither team found another run and the Trojans won 2-1.

KEY STATS

  • UMO tallied two runs on seven hits. Thompson and Childress scored the two runs for the Trojans.
  • Mallory Ratcliff (W: 5-3) went a full seven innings in the circle giving up one run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
