Trojans Split Nonconference Doubleheader Against Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Mount Olive softball team split their road doubleheader against the Cobras of Coker College in midweek nonconference action on Thursday afternoon at the Saleeby-Stokes Softball Field in Hartsville, S.C. Great pitching by Emily Chaisson in game one helped the Trojans win game one 6-2, while UMO's bats went cold for game two as the Green and White only put one run on the board in game two.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Mount Olive found the scoreboard early as the Trojans put one run up in the top of the first. Charlene Thompson reached base with a single to the pitcher and advanced to second on a SAC bunt by Cassandra Lassiter. Thompson advanced to third after Callie Ferrell batted into an error by the shortstop and finally came home off a double to left field by Eileen Barrera.
  • Coker kept the Trojans off the scoreboard during the second and third while Mount Olive led by Emily Chaisson in the circle held the Cobras to just a single run in the bottom of the second before the visitors put up three in the top of the fourth.
  • Amber Elliott crossed the plate for the first time in the game after reaching base on an error by the second baseman and advancing to second after Lassiter was hit by a pitch. Ferrell earned credit for an RBI as she hit a double to centerfield that scored Elliott and advanced Lassiter to third.
  • Lassiter came home and Ferrell advanced to third after Barrera reached first on a fielders choice and a double by Alexis Oliver to centerfield scored Ferrell for the third run of the inning while Barrera stopped at third and was left stranded.
  • UMO increased their lead to six runs with a pair in the top of the fifth inning as Megan Bryant and Lassiter both rounded the bases and were sent home on a double to left center hit by Ferrell.
  • The Cobras held off the shutout as they scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, both unearned runs, to put the final score at 6-2.

KEY STATS

  • Emily Chaisson earns the win pitched a full seven innings giving up two runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
  • Callie Ferrell had a great game behind the bat as she recorded three RBI's on two doubles in her four at-bats. She also crossed the plate once for a run herself.
  • Eileen Barrera and Alexis Oliver each added a double for the remaining three RBI's.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • UMO scored the opening run, again, as Cassandra Lassiter hit a solo home run over the left field wall.
  • Neither team scored in the second through fifth innings but the Cobras found some life in the bottom of the sixth as the first baseman hit a three-run homer over the leftfield wall to give Coker a 3-1 lead. 
  • The Cobras continued with two more runs in the bottom six to head into the seventh with a 5-1 lead, however, the Trojans could not produce any runs in the top of the inning and dropped game two.

KEY STATS

  • Lassiter scored the lone run for the Trojans of game two. 
  • UMO recorded one run on six hits with one error in the game. 

NEXT

Mount Olive returns home to the friendly confines of Nancy Chapman Cassell Field for a pair of weekend contests against Conference Carolinas foes in Lees-McRae and King. The Trojans and Bobcats meet on Saturday, March 23, for a doubleheader at 2 & 4 PM. The Tornado take to the field to face the Trojans on Sunday, March 24, for a 1 & 3 PM doubleheader matinee.
