MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Mount Olive softball team split the doubleheader against the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The regulation seven innings was a defensive battle as neither team managed to score despite each team recording three hits apiece and leaving batters stranded on the bases.
  • The Bobcats of Lees-McRae scored the game-winning run in the top of the eighth following the right fielder being placed at second according to the international batting rules. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner from second to third and she went home following a single to center field.
  • UMO had the same opportunity in the bottom of the eighth but the Trojans went three-up, three-down leaving the runner stranded on second as the Bobcats won game one.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The opening four innings were much like game one as the teams match up well and the defenses kept the other teams' offense from scoring runs.
  • UMO found themselves putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead over LMC.
  • Callie Ferrell started things off reaching base on a single down the leftfield line and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A SAC bunt by Charlene Thompson advanced Ferrell to third and she came home on a single to right center by Amber Elliott for the first run of game two.
  • Elliott stole second and ran home following a single by Cassandra Lassiter to right center field for run number two.
  • The last run scored as Eileen Barrera doubled to centerfield sending Lassiter home for the third and final run of the inning.
  • Lees-McRae escaped the shutout as the third baseman hit a home run over the left field wall putting the score at 3-1.

KEY STATS

  • Mallory Ratcliff (W: 7-4) pitched a full seven innings giving up the solo home run on six hits while striking out seven in the game.
  • The Trojan offense scored three runs on six hits and left six runners on the bags.
