Mount Olive And King Split Conference Carolinas Doubleheader On Sunday Afternoon

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Mount Olive softball team split the doubleheader against the Tornado of King University in Conference Carolinas action on Sunday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • King got the action started scoring a run in the opening inning as a bases-loaded walk scored the lone run for the Tornado.
  • Mount Olive took the lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs as Megan Bryant and Charlene Thompson both crossed home plate.
  • Bryant got on base after singling to left center and advanced to second following a single by Thompson through the right side.
  • Both runners advanced two bases, with Bryant scoring, after Amber Elliott singled to center field. Elliott stole second barely beating out the pick-off and Thompson saw the opportunity to score and ran home for the second UMO run.
  • The Trojans added four more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth as Callie Ferrell, Alexis Oliver, Bryant, and Thompson all scored a run.
  • Oliver got the rally going following a single to the pitcher that popped off the shin of the Tornado thrower. Ferrell singled through the left side and advanced Oliver to scoring position. Bryant scored both runners as she doubled to center field that put UMO ahead 4-1.
  • Thompson reached first on a fielding error by the third baseman and Bryant advanced to third on the play. Thompson stole second and both she and Bryant came home on a single to centerfield by Elliott putting the score at 6-1.
  • Neither teams offense produced any more remaining runs despite the Tornado leaving three left on base and the Trojans one.

  • The second game of the day was a defensive battle as neither team gave up many scoring chances.
  • King scored their lone run, the only run of the game, in the top of the first on a single to center field that scored the runner from second base.
  • Emily Chaisson, who came into the game in the top of the fifth in relief for Mallory Ratcliff, managed to get herself out of a bases-loaded situation in the top of the sixth.

KEY STATS

  • Mallory Ratcliff (L: 7-5) was the pitcher of record giving up the lone score of the game. Ratcliff gave up one run on four hits in 4.1 innings pitched. She walk one and struck out three.
