MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Mount Olive softball team won both games of the midweek doubleheader against the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Belmont Abbey got things going first with a solo run in the top of the first inning as the runner on third came home following a wild pitch to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
  • UMO had no response for BAC until the bottom of the third inning when they put up four runs to take the 4-1 lead.
  • Three consecutive singles, one each from Hannah Burress, Madison Morgan and Charlene Thompson, loaded the bases for Amber Elliott.
  • Elliott reach first on a fielders choice as the Abbey second baseman thrrew home to the catcher to tag out Burress eliminating the scoring play.
  • Callie Ferrell earned two RBI after she reached on a throwing error by the shortstop that sailed over the head of the first baseman and score Morgan and Thompson while advancing Elliott to third.
  • Ferrell stole second putting runers at second and third for Eileen Barrera who brought in both runs on a single to right that scored Ferrell and Elliott putting the score at 4-1 UMO's lead and ending the socring for the third inning.
  • Hannah Burress started things again, this time in the fourth inning, as she reached base on a single to the shortstop. She advanced to second on an error by the left fielder during a Madison Morgan at-bat that allowed Morgan to reach first.
  • A single up the middle from Charlene Thompson advanced the runners a base as the senior outfielder loaded the bases taking her place at first.
  • Amber Elliott hit a single to left field that scored Burress for the fifth run of the game for UMO and advanced Morgan and Thompson each a base.
  • After a pitching switch, Callie Ferrell was walked which brought in a run to give the Trojans a 6-1 lead and Eileen Barrera followed up with a single through the right side that scored two, Morgan and Thompson, as well as advancing Ferrell to third.
  • A sacrifice fly to the centerfielder scored Ferrell for the final score of the inning as UMO heading into the top of the fifth with a 9-1 lead.
  • Haley Brogden's pitching was lights out as the sophomore thrower struck out two and sent the third back to the dugout after flying out to centerfield as Mount Olive downed Belmont Abbey via run-rule, 9-1, in five innings.

KEY STATS

  • Eileen Barrera tallied four RBI in the contest in her three at-bats off two hits.
  • Haley Brogden (W: 9-6) pitched all five innings giving up one run on three hits while striking out eight batters of the 19 she faced.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Belmont Abbey again got the action started as they scored a solo run in the top of the second and added two more in the top third taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning.
  • Charlene Thompson reached base on a single to the third baseman in the bottom of the third starting a rally for the Trojans. 
  • The right fielder stole second and ran home off a single up the middle by Amber Elliott to get UMO on the scoreboard trailing 3-1.
  • After the bases loaded up, Cassandra Lassiter hit a single to the shortstop which scored Elliott, who rounded the bases during prior at-bats, closing the gap to one run heading into the top of the fourth.
  • BAC regained a three-run lead in the top of the fourth as the shortstop flew out to left field for a sacrifice RBI that scored the runner on third as the bases were loaded.
  • UMO knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth as Callie Ferrell and Breanna Voelker both scored in the half innning.
  • Ferrell, after reaching base on a single down the left line, advanced to third on a single up the middle by Eileen Barrera. Voelker came in to pinch run for Barrera and stole second right after coming into the game. 
  • Lassiter for the second time in the game scored an RBI as she grounded out to the second baseman allowing Ferrell the space and time to come home.
  • A single up the middle by Alexis Oliver scored Voelker, who had moved to third on the Lassiter groundout, for the tying run.
  • Neither team found a run in the sixth inning and the Trojans held the Crusaders scoreless in the top of the seventh. 
  • UMO after getting runners on first and second, scored the game-winning run on a fielding error by the firstbaseman during a Burress at-bat to give the Trojans the 5-4 walk-off win.
